This Bavarian Bauernschrank from the Bad Tölz region exemplifies mid-19th-century Alpine folk craft. Set against a deep black ground, the cabinet is animated by stylised trees of life and devotional hearts bearing the monograms of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, merging domestic function with religious symbolism. The painted surface transforms the utilitarian storage cabinet into a narrative object, embodying a rural poetics of use and devotion.
